Grand Union Canal: Aylesbury Arm: Marsworth Lock No 1

This is the upper of the pair of locks at the eastern end of the narrow Aylesbury Arm and the first lock encountered when leaving the main Grand Union Canal at Marsworth. The pair form a staircase lock where the bottom gates of the top lock form the top gates of the lower lock. It is essential when going down this flight that the bottom lock is empty so that it can receive the water from the top lock, and equally essential that the top lock is full when going up the flight. There is a side paddle, visible over the ladder railings on the right, that can be lifted to drain this lock. The pair of locks are Grade II Listed, dating from around 1811 to 1814 when the canal was opened.
