The Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) in a canalside tree at Smethwick. Not an uncommon bird, but more often seen stalking shallow water for small fish and amphibians, or flying with its distinctive neck tucked in, and its long legs trailing behind. They nest communally in (guess what?) heronries, sometimes tens of pairs.
