This wall flanks the grounds of the old Mainsforth Hall, demolished in 1962 which was once occupied by the 18th century antiquarian Robert Surtees. http://www.northeastengland.talktalk.net/Sedgefield%20and%20South%20Durham.htm#MIDDLEHAM%20AND%20MAINSFORTH The path runs from Mainsforth to Chilton Lane.
