The sign is on a post outside the pub. The Chequers (in this case the New Chequers) is a not uncommon name for pubs and inns, but various theories exist as to the origin of the name, and people can't agree which is correct. Popular ones include (1) that it is derived from the name of an ingredient used in beer making in medieval times, (2) that it derives from a Roman sign to indicate taverns or inns which provided a banking facility and that the word Exchequer is derived from this, and (3) it is connected with the chequerboard (or checkerboard) used to play games such as draughts and chess. No doubt such games were often played in pubs and this sign seems to reflect that theory. Image
