The church was built in 1803 and completed in 1813 under the influence of Rev Robert Renoul and Rev Thomas Greer. Marcus Gage gave a rood of ground but Sir Harvey Bruce and Marcus Gage were the principal contributors. Dr. William Allison gave £60 towards installing thirty four pews. It is reported in the Thomasville Times Georgia on 29th of October 1930 that 'The Rev. Hugh Butler, so far as known here the world's oldest clergyman in point of service and years of life, died today aged 104. He had been minister of the Magilligan Presbyterian church nearly 79 years.'
