On 11 October 2005, a blessed hush fell on the main street through Chilton, when the Chilton By-pass was opened taking all the traffic on the A167 (formerly the Great North Road) away from the village http://www.durham.gov.uk/durhamcc/usp.nsf/pws/Roads+-+Chilton+Bypass . The opportunity has since been taken for undertaking some environmental improvements to the village centre.
