The small settlement on the north side of Kielder village is called Catcleugh after the stream that joins the River North Tyne nearby, a name also shared with the reservoir on the A68 much further east. Both names provide a memory of the wildcats that were once found in both areas of north Northumberland. Reintroduction of the wild lynx has been considered in this area in the past and there have been frequent recent sightings of big cats.
