The site contains the remains of a medieval furnace in the Angiddy Valley, chosen as the location for ironworks because of the availability of water power from the Angiddy River, charcoal from surrounding woods, and iron ore. The ironworks occupied a much wider area than the fenced site remaining today. The furnace ceased production in 1826 when improved methods of manufacture made the ironworks redundant.
