The 14th century, Raby Castle was built by the powerful local family of Neville one of whom, Cecily Neville, Duchess of York was mother of Richard III and Edward IV. The castle is now in the hands of the Vane family, Barons of Barnard and the present incumbent is John Vane the 11th. Baron.
