The exposed timber framing at the top confirms that this is a Ludlow type postbox. Ludlow postboxes were manufactured by the firm of James Ludlow & Sons as a low cost alternative to cast-iron boxes for installation at smaller post offices where the postmaster/mistress had to cover the cost of mail collection. Originally it would have had an enamelled panel similar to this one http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1466526.
