A church was planned for the growing hamlet of Sayers Common in 1850 but lack of funds meant a scaled down version was only started in 1879 and even then only the nave was completed, a chancel was added in 1909. The designer was Charles Barry Junior, son of Houses of Parliament architect Sir Charles Barry, the latter also designed Image, the mother church of the parish of Hurstpierpoint.
