Alas poor Yorick, hast thou been fed on by the pigeons? Statue in a niche on the outside of the Partington Players Theatre Image When the former Liberal Club was built in 1914, the plans made provision for a niche to be constructed on the Henry Street side to house a statue of Edward VII. This was never accomplished partly because of lack of the necessary funds, but, perhaps more importantly, because of the unsavoury reputation of the man which might have aroused public ill feeling. In 1994, Stewart Gartside, decided to fill the gap, as it were. Using a member of the Youth Theatre as a model, and assisted by Rosemary Betts, he sculpted a life size figure of Hamlet philosophising over the skull of poor Yorick. This was then cast in stone and carefully hoisted into position over the main entrance.
