Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864–1933), a Scottish painter of landscapes (especially with children), moved here to Broughton House in 1901, and it continued to be his main residence for the rest of his life. The house and library were subsequently given to the town of Kirkcudbright, and the house is currently administered by the National Trust for Scotland.
