The short Tuel Lane tunnel from which the boat is emerging and the very deep lock just beyond have just been reconstructed to link the Yorkshire side of the Rochdale Canal with the rest of the canal network. This link had only been in use for a few days when this picture was taken, and had not yet even had the"official" opening ceremony.
