A total of 16 prisoners were executed at Crumlin Road Gaol between 1854 and 1961 http://www.crumlinroadgaol.com/executions.html . These took place in front of the prison until 1901 when this existing cell in C Wing was converted into an execution chamber. Apparently the rope is genuine. The bodies of the executed were buried inside the prison in unconsecrated ground and the graves were marked only with their initials and year of execution on the prison wall (although 2 of those were later exhumed and buried elsewhere).
