Despite their clasped hands, they are not a married couple but siblings, son Thomas Howard (MP) and daughter Mary Howard standing to the right of their parents. They died in 1682 and 1685 respectively, Thomas reputedly in a duel fought close by: the red daub on his breast is said to represent the blood he shed.
