The access to the world-famous model village and railway may seem to be somewhat incongruously placed between the boundary hedges of two residential properties in Warwick Road, but the whole project started off in life as a model railway in the back garden of one of the houses. It was opened in 1929 and will, at the time of writing, be celebrating its 85th birthday over the weekend of 9 and 10 August 2014. All profits from the operation are given to charity with over £5.5 million having been donated since 1929.
