The old toll house lies at the former Muddleswood Crossing and was built in the early 19th century to serve a new London-Brighton highway that later became the A23. Since the early 1990s both the eastern section of the b2117 and the A23 itself has been rerouted, the old course of the latter can be seen in the distance.
