Although not easy to see on the photograph, the sheep are standing on the raised embankment which protects the low lying farm land behind. The tide is at its low point and the river is reduced to a narrow band of water. At high tide this part of the Ribble forms a route between the Leeds Liverpool canal and the Lancaster canal.
