Castles of Ulster: Termon, Donegal (1)

Termon is located just inside the Republic's border with Northern Ireland, and near to the north shore of Lower Lough Erne. The castle was built c.1615 by James MacGrath, the son of a Catholic Bishop of Down who became a Protestant in 1567. A siege conducted by Col. Henry Ireton in 1650 ended with most of the landward-facing northern sides of the tower and bawn destroyed by cannon fire. Image
