Built in the late C16 as almshouses "for six poor women of good character of the parish". They were given in the will of Lady Alice Countess of Derby. She was born Lady Alice Spencer of Althorp in around 1520. She married the Fifth Earl of Derby and when he died, Sir Thomas Egerton. This is when she came to live at Harefield House. The Almshouses are still owned by the charity.
