Coldharbour is a 55 metre long row of houses on the south side of the A385 Bridgetown Hill. There are many instances in the UK of locations named Cold Harbour or Coldharbour. The name is of late Saxon origin, cognate with the various Caldicots, Colecotes, etc. Cold meant abandoned. The distinction was generally that Cold Harbours were abandoned settlements of some size, protected by earth walls, timber, or ruined stonework, whereas the Cold Cots were small, isolated dwelling places that had fallen into disuse.
