St John Evangelist : Eton

St John Evangelist began as a very large mid-Victorian parish church, built to house a congregation of 1100. Some 100 years later, faced with a declining congregation and increasing repair bills, the church was closed to public worship and demolition was mooted. At which point Eton College came to the rescue, purchased the building, converting and extending the nave to provide the college sanatorium, together with staff accommodation, the lower part of the chancel as the town medical centre and doctors' surgery, and the upper part of the chancel as the present church premises.
