For almost 100 years until 1740 the house served as town Hall and prison; it was rented in the 17th century by the Magistrates from a Patrick Murray as a tolbooth, a major feature of Scottish towns in the 17th century. William Trail some time after 1821 rebuilt the part of old Ridgeland which faces Broad Street and is probably the reason the Category B listing describes it as early 19th century. It was also later Hay's tea room, a doctor's surgery, and a boarding house for students from the Northern Isles attending school in Kirkwall.
