Comparing OS maps for 1905 and 1933 suggests that Bishopsteignton Road between Mill Lane and the bend west of Shaldon Bridge was widened on both sides. This retaining wall (probably concrete faced with Devonian limestone) holds back the hillside and holds up the gardens of the properties along Inverteign and Milford Close above. The former was possibly being developed from the late 1920s while the latter does not appear on maps until the 1970s. This wall is certainly more weathered than, say, the retaining walls to Coombe Vale Road and villa front gardens to the east along Bitton Park Road. The photo shows the island and traffic lights at the busy junction of Bishopsteignton Road A381 and Torquay Road A379.
