Like many public houses in Wantage, this was acquired by the brewers Greene King of Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, when they bought the long established Morlands Brewery of Abingdon in 1999 and quickly closed it down. The king on the sign may be King Alfred the Great, the 9th century monarch of Wessex, who was born in Wantage in 849 AD. Originally there would undoubtedly have been a sign depicting a boar, which would have been an animal immediately recognised by people who were not literate. Image
