There are two buoys along the side of Harbour Road as it enters Rye Harbour. They make a striking impression. On the other one is a notice explaining that "This buoy is a 3rd class spherical fairway marker placed two miles off Rye by 'Alsfords Wharf' in 1971. The buoy marks the safe anchoring position for vessels arriving with timber and aggregates awaiting the high tide. It was replaced by a more modern buoy by Trinity House in 2005."
