The war memorial is also situated on this site. Initially the Public Elementary School which was built in 1896. The cost was funded jointly by Lord Hastings and the Railway Company. It was enlarged twice, in 1900 and 1906.to accommodate 320 children ( mixed and infants). The school closed in 1984 and converted to flats.
