This is a very handsome mill, built in 1843 and now Listed Grade II. It last worked in 1960. The finely carved slab in the central recess on the top floor carries the Hewley coat of arms but is older than the building (there is a similar one dated 1700 on a building in York, and in 1705 Sarah Helwey had granted most of her manor in West Ayton to Trustees for the maintenance of dissenting ministers).
