This shows one of the arches of the nine unsupported concrete barrel vaults of the roof. When the garage was opened in 1952 by the London Transport Executive, the building represented the largest unsupported area (392 x 194 feet) under one roof in Europe. Not surprisingly it is now a Grade II Listed Building. Its construction was in part inspired by Manchester Corporation's Northenden bus garage opened in 1941. It was originally planned as a trolleybus depot but by the early 1950s trolleybuses were beginning to fall from favour and it was built as a bus garage instead. It is presently owned by London General, an operating company within the Go-Ahead Group.
