This is the centre of Roe Green Village, as per the sign in front of the shop. It is a sort of poor man's Hampstead Garden Suburb, with a few streets of similar poky cottages, which unlike Hampstead Garden Suburb have never become particularly expensive compared to the neighbouring areas.
