Penenden Heath has a long and fascinating history going back to the Norman Conquest, and later both Wat Tyler and Thomas Wyatt gathered their forces here - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penenden_Heath for the full history. Penenden Heath is now merely a suburb of Maidstone and the Heath, part of which is seen here, is just a small remnant. The clock is unusual and even more unusually it was very accurate. It has faces on both sides. The Bull Inn can be seen across the grass.
