This detail view of the "Aylesbury" font at St Nicholas, Great Kimble shows the fluted sculpture of the chalice-like bowl and beneath it a little of the "rope" ornamentation that separates the bowl from the base of the font. Note the remnants of red paint on this font; I don't know how old this paint is, but in the mediæval period the stonework of churches was far more elaborately painted than is now the fashion, so it may date back five or more centuries.
