A pair of Ashworth and Parker of Bury inverted vertical (enclosed) steam engines that drove paper machines. I think the closest is a duplex, No. 863 of 1921/3 that was in use until possibly 1998 and on standby to 2000. Beyond it is compound No. 197 of 1910 and on standby 1985 to ?1998. These are now out of use and were due to be removed for preservation but I suspect they are still in situ. Steam engines made sense in papermills as the exhaust could be used for drying, thus recovering the latent heat and making the overall process more efficient. We just turned up on a Sunday afternoon and the maintenance staff very kindly let us in.
