St Thomas' Square was built alongside the southern end of Mare Street by 1800, and was laid out as a public garden in 1892 by Hackney District Board. The drinking fountain dates from 1912 and is made of pink and grey polished granite. The inscription on the base says "Presented to the Hackney Borough Council by Morris Nelson Esq in memory of his wife Esther. Unveiled by Councillor William Hammer Mayor of Hackney 31st October 1912". See http://www.londonremembers.com/memorials/the-nelsons-drinking-fountain
