The 16-year-old Panama-registered cargo ship, 'Donald Ducking', arrived at Tyne Dock in November 2013 to pick up a cargo of scrap metal bound for Korea but was detained for a variety of mechanical and safety issues by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). The largely Filipino and Romanian crew spent Christmas 2013 on board the vessel before their repatriation in January 2014 assisted by the International Transport Workers' Federation. and various seafarers’ welfare organisations. The ship's owner, Taiwan-based TMT, has applied for bankruptcy protection in the US with reported debts totalling $800m (£482m). It now owes thousands of pounds to the Port of Tyne for fuel and berthing fees, as well as £50,000 in crew wages. The vessel is now unmanned and berthed at the former McNulty Offshore Quay at South Shields to minimise the impact on commercial shipping and maintain the vessel’s security.
