Bedminster's East Street has long been a central part of the old area's character. It used to be outside the old city of Bristol boundaries and has a long history, largely independent until more recent times. Home to many miners, tanners, soap and candle factory workers, it also boasted a strong local economy. In the nineteenth century the tobacco industry supported many families but the factory closed in the 1970s. Since then the main shopping street has seen hard times and the many businesses have undergone lots of change. This is the upper part of East Street with the old E.S. and A. Robinson's printers factory in the background. It is now an exclusive residential block.
