The time of its manufacture this was the world’s largest tyre. The Dunlop Earthmover tyre, which has a diameter of 7ft and a width of 2½ft and weighs 1 ton, took 2 men over a working week to build. It emerged from a mould at Fort Dunlop, in Birmingham, on 13 March 1957.It is now on display outside the Lakeland Motor museum at Backbarrow; an idea of its scale can be gained by comparing it to the picnic bench and table next to it. Such tyres were used on the 40-ton dump truck and the Caterpillar No 90 Scraper; these vehicles were use in open cast coal mining, road building, airfield construction and dam construction all over the world.
