Work has started replacing the fire damaged timbers on the land-based section of the Staithes. African ekki timber (red ironwood), which is from sustainable supplies, is being used not the original American pitch pine which is unsustainable. The work is being carried out by Blaydon-based contractors Owen Pugh.
