The viaduct ahead carries the St Helens to Wigan railway line over the Sankey Valley at Carr Mill Dam. To the right hand side of the path which curves under the viaduct, is one of the overflows from Carr Mill Dam which feeds into the blackbrook basin which, in turn, leads to the Blackbrook Canal, a part of the Sankey Navigation.
