Former Port Ellen Distillery

These grey-roofed white buildings are the warehouses of the former Port Ellen distillery which closed in 1983 though its maltings, owned by the drinks giant Diageo are still operational and provide the malted barley for all the Islay distilleries. Remaining stocks of the malt produced by the Port Ellen distillery are increasing in value due to the fact that none is now produced. There have been plans to re-open this distillery if market forces suggest it would be propitious.
