From the days when the General Post Office was responsible for the telephone network as well as the mails. The title refers to the old style telephone boxes in which you put money into the slot and when answered pressed button A to speak and when the call was over pressed button B to have your unspent credit returned. It seems to be a cable joint marker and would have originally, with inset numerals, given the depth at which the cable joint lay. This example in Kings Road, Kingstanding shows the wear and tear of a number of years. The GPO was replaced by BT (British Telecommunications) in 1981.
