The gas works

The site in the foreground has been associated with gas production/supply since 1824, when Coventry Gas Works first occupied it. Production moved to the Foleshill gas works in 1898 on the area now occupied by the Ricoh Arena and shopping centre ( Image ). The white building was built in the late 1960s/early 70s as offices for the then West Midlands Gas Board and the site is currently part of National Grid. The bit of ring road in the foreground follows roughly the line of the old Gas Street. Update 2013 - the building has now been demolished: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3322337
