In the days of steam this was a level crossing, and there was an iron footbridge. Later, the bridge was removed and the lifting-barrier crossing, controlled from Sneinton signal box, was only used by pedestrians and cyclists - it is shown towards the end of its life in Image] (June 2013), which makes an interesting comparison with this image.
