In the heart of the small Roxburghshire village. The village. or town was created Burgh of Barony in 1587 but was indeed a burgh before that illustrious event and had possessed a fine market cross from the 14th. century when Walter, 6th. High Steward of Scotland was granted Mackistoun with the right to raise it to burgh status, erect a cross and hold markets and fairs. While parts of the original remain, the cross was largely renewed in 1881 by Sir William Ramsay Fairfax, a local dignitary.
