In John Knox Street, there’s a plaque on the wall of a modern building which is close to the site of “The Debate” between Quintin Kennedy, Abbot of Crossraguel, and the famous Scottish Reformer, John Knox. The Abbot had preached a sermon in the old church in Kirkoswald, defending the doctrine that, during Mass or Communion, bread and wine actually changed into the body and blood of Christ. Knox had attended the church on the following Sunday, hoping to challenge the Abbot. Kennedy did not preach in Kirkoswald that day, but challenged Knox to a public debate on the matter. This took place in the Maybole Provost’s house in November 1562. The debate ended three days later, with neither party winning their case.
