S&E Collier was the largest brickworks in Reading, established in the mid 19th century. Production ceased in 1967, and the site here at Grovelands was redeveloped with housing. Shortly after the end of World War I a memorial to fallen employees was erected in Water Road. Unfortunately it was demolished by a car in 1990, and the structure we see today is a replacement (sign on back of monument, see photo http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3953752 ). The plaque lists 28 names, including two members of the Collier family. Those who gave their lives in World War II are also remembered, though not named.
