A few courses of stonework are all that remains of this castle which occupied a powerful position above the Derwent Valley. The keep was originally over 90 feet square with walls up to 15 feet thick making it one of the most impressive Norman castles. Its destruction was brought about by the failed revolt against the King by Robert de Ferrers.
