Brixham residents with long memories will remember when "Devon Industries" was a thriving enterprise on the main road into Brixham. Like so many thriving businesses, Devon Industries has fallen by the wayside. It is somewhat sad and there is a rusting gas cylinder on the gatepost. The business used to supply these so it was a kind of advertisement. This building and its former function is symbolic, I think, of the problems facing Brixham and Torbay at present. There were more than a few residents who fell about when Torquay was made the most popular destination in the UK after London. No doubt it is the coastline and the countryside which brings this about, if not the determined efforts of teams of reviewers burning the midnight oil writing to Trip Advisor. Brixham is not so bad, Paignton is not so bad, but a walk down the main street in Torquay in 2014 could not really be recommended to anyone looking for a pleasurable stroll in their holiday destination.
