Built between 1722-27 by the Pelham family who remained owners until the Second World War when it was given over for military use. After the war the house and surrounding estate was acquired by Brighton Council who are still owners today. The war years took a heavy toll on the house and the north and west wings were demolished afterwards which partly revealed the site of the original Jacobean manor house. Between 1961-80 the building was used as offices for the nearby University of Sussex after which it became empty and had problems with squatters. Since 2004 the building has been refurbished and run by a pub chain who now operate a bar and restaurant in the building and hire the house out for a variety of events.
